Congrats! Welcome to the wild, messy, and wonderful world of Ammahood, where sleep is going to be myth for the coming months, coffee is a food group, and your house will never be clean again. EVER! But don’t worry — I’ve got your back. Here’s a list of all the essentials you actually need as a first-time Amma. I’m talking about the stuff that will keep you sane, help you function, and make you feel like you might actually have a clue about what you’re doing (even when you totally don’t).

A Swaddle That Actually Works

You’ve probably seen those cute little blankets that make your baby look like an adorable burrito, right? Well, here’s the thing: unless you’ve got swaddle skills like a maternity nurse, your baby will wriggle out of that thing like Houdini.Invest in a swaddle with Velcro or zippers. Trust me, you’ll thank me at 2 AM when you’re trying to re-wrap a flailing baby without fully waking them up (because nothing says “nightmare” like an awake baby at 2 AM). I personally loved Halo’s Swaddle Sleep Sack and Kyte Baby’s Sleep Bag Swaddler!

A White Noise Machine

You might think babies need silence to sleep. Wrong! They spent nine months in your womb listening to your heartbeat, digestive noises, and basically the soundtrack to a horror movie :)  A white noise machine will drown out all the house sounds (like you sneaking to the kitchen for a midnight snack and watching your trash tv while you’re pumping). A good white noise machine is like  a baby kryptonite — but in a good way! I’m a huge fan of the Hatch products mostly because you can use it well into their toddler years and beyond!

A Reliable Baby Carrier

This thing will be your lifesaver when your baby decides that the only acceptable place to nap is on your chest, but you still want to do basic human activities like making a sandwich or peeing. Whether you prefer a soft wrap or a more structured carrier, find one that feels good to you and your partner. Bonus: it doubles as a workout routine because carrying a baby is the only weightlifting you’ll be doing for the next year. When I had my first baby, my daughter spoiled me as she was an expert napper – she could sleep anywhere so I didn’t have to use a baby carrier or wrap. On the flip side – when I had my son, he would only nap when someone was carrying him – I made good use out of the Solly Baby wrap and Ergobaby carrier.

Rock-Solid Coffee Maker (or Tea Kettle)

You’re going to need caffeine. Lots of it. Maybe more than you ever thought possible. If you don’t already have a coffee maker that practically brews itself, now is the time to invest. Alternatively, if you’re more of a tea person, get a good kettle and stock up on all the calming herbal blends (though let’s be real — most of us end up mainlining caffeine to survive).

Baby Brezza Washer Pro

If there is one thing that you should invest in as a first time mom, it’s the Baby Brezza Washer Pro. When you’re juggling spit-ups, blowouts, and the 3 a.m. cluster feeds, the Baby Brezza Washer Pro is like that magical friend who shows up with coffee. This sleek bottle and pump parts washer doesn’t just clean—it sanitizes with hot water and dries everything in under an hour, saving you from the eternal “Did I boil this yet?” loop. Perfect for new parents who don’t have time for endless scrubbing, it’s a sanity-saver for sleep-deprived hands. Trust me, this gadget will earn its counter space.

Diapering Arsenal

Obviously, you need diapers. But here’s the scoop: babies go through diapers like frat boys go through pizza & jello shots. Get a mix of different brands and sizes because you won’t know which one fits your baby best until they’re actually here. Also, get a diaper pail that seals in the smell of the apocalypse and a stash of wipes big enough to clean up a small-scale natural disaster. Trust me, you’re going to need them.

Nursing Pillow (or Just a Bunch of Regular Pillows)

If you’re planning to breastfeed, a nursing pillow will save your back and shoulders from turning into a pretzel. I would know – I had a major pinching nerve that had me tears! But honestly? Any pillow can work. Just make sure you have a bunch within arm’s reach. You’ll use them to prop up the baby, prop up yourself, or, let’s be real, for a quick nap while the baby is on boob duty.

A Really Good Baby Monitor

You don’t need to spend a fortune, but do get one with video if you can swing it. This is less about keeping an eye on the baby and more about giving yourself peace of mind. It also lets you check in on them without risking stepping on that one squeaky floorboard and waking them up. The Nanit has been my best friend – It’s extremely user friendly!

Burp Cloths Everywhere

You think you need a few? Try *dozens*. Babies spit up, and they do it often. So, have a burp cloth in every room, in every bag, in the car, and maybe even a few stashed under your pillow. They will save your sanity, your furniture and your clothes!

Patience & Being Kind To Yourself

You can’t buy this one, but you’ll need a lot of it. Babies are tiny, adorable chaos agents. They don’t care about your plans, your need for sleep, or your love for hot meals. But remember: you’re learning them, and they’re learning you. Give yourself grace. You’re both new at this and you’re doing great!

Final Thoughts:

There you have it, Amma! The real essentials you need as you embark on this crazy journey. Will you feel overwhelmed? Absolutely. Will you feel like you don’t know what you’re doing? Of course. But guess what? You’re going to be amazing. You’ve got this, and with the right gear in your corner, you’ll be ready to handle whatever ammahood or your baby throws your way.

And remember, there’s no shame in asking for help or Googling “Why won’t my baby sleep?” for the hundredth time at 4 AM. You’re in good company.

Welcome to the Club, Amma!
